What does it take to raise kids who don't run away from life's challenges, but have the faith and courage to run toward them? In this message, “Raising Kids That Run,” I look at the story of David and Goliath in 1 Samuel 17 and what David's life teaches us about raising strong, responsible, confident, faith-filled children. David didn't suddenly become courageous when Goliath appeared. Long before the giant, God was developing his character in private. David learned responsibility while tending sheep. He learned obedience by completing the assignments his father gave him. He experienced rejection from people close to him. And he learned to trust God through battles nobody else saw. Those private victories prepared him for his public battle. As parents, grandparents, mentors, and believers, we have a responsibility to recognize what God has placed inside the next generation and help draw it out of them. We have to teach them responsibility, help them develop confidence, prepare them to handle rejection, and remind them that their identity isn't determined by the opinions of other people.
